Primitive Oxford Punch Needle....TURKEY Rug *~

Can you believe September is coming to a close. I really need to be busy on my quest with some deep cleaning but my day just doesn't seem complete unless I have held a needle of some sort in my hands.
This morning I finished this little turkey rug and it turned out oh so prim....Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays!

I plan to have this listed on eBay in the morning. Hope you'll stop over and take a look.....NYAFARMGIRL

Our little poppy seed shop will also have a couple of new items tomorrow. October is sure to be filled with lots of happenings. Hope you stop by again and see what we have been up too!

How to Over~dye cotton yarn for Oxford Punch Needle

I've been trying out my oxford punch needle and purchased some "Sugar & Cream" cotton yarn. It comes in too bright of colors for my liking so out with the rit dye and my crock pot. If you like primitive you might want to give this a try!

This is what it looks like before it hit the dye pot. I just unwound some of the skein and tied some together at the top...

You will want to start heating your crockpot with water on high then just pour in some rit dye....I don't measure I just pour in about 1/4 of the bottle....I add more as I need it. I also add in just a tad bit of salt or vinegar to set the color in!

While I'm waiting for my dye pot to get good and warm...I continue getting my yarn ready and let it soak in some clean water.

When I'm ready to dye my cotton yarn I just twist it good and tight.

I then dip it down into the pot. After I dipped it in I set part of it on the edge of the rim and let a portion of the yarn stay in the dye to give it more of a variegated look.

I rinse it a couple of times in clean water then I let it dry.

Now doesn't that look nice and prim!

Here it is side by side....bright to prim! Give it a try today it is a fun and simple way to prim up your cotton yarn.

~*SUNDAY SOCIAL*~

Another beautiful day and I can truly say that when we gather together as a church family it does my soul good.
My mom's older brother and his wife started a little country church in 1981. They are no longer here on earth as well as some of our other members. I thought of them this evening as we gathered under our new pavilion and fellow shipped together. They would have been happy to see how much we have grown and would have been pleased as we enjoyed singing, playing, and visiting with one another.

The children enjoyed many games of volleyball, tether ball, horseshoes and much more.

While the kids were enjoying their games....Danny and I were busy cooking hamburgers, hotdogs, smoked sausages, and bratwurst. Before long the food was cooked and we enjoyed a wonderful meal together.

Next came the entertainment. My niece Mandy is just learning how to play the piano. Her older sister Erin is teaching her.

We not only had gospel but we had a little bluegrass, too. Erin can play the piano like a pro and I could listen to her play for hours.

Some of the girls sang ....I'll fly away, Down to the River to Pray, and many more.

This lil' boy was accompanied by his Daddy as he sang Amazing Grace. If that doesn't warm your heart.....

Doesn't my Mom look cool in her shades!

Beautiful flute music from this young lady filled the air.

My sis Jane with her hubby Brian. He is an officer with the Highway Patrol. He found a little time to stop by and enjoy some food and see his girls play the piano and join in on the singing.

My sister Sherry with her two children.

The clean up crew! Three of these guys are my cousins. They are talented musicians. They can play guitars, banjo's, fiddles, and the piano.

Soon we will have another church social and it's sure to be just as fun. I hope you enjoyed your Sunday and were blessed in some special way. I know I have been!

~*Country Collections*~

Thanks to Betty of Primitivebetty's I was inspired to give my oxford punchneedle another try. Actually I had ordered a smaller one and it arrived when Betty posted about doing some punching with her oxford punch. Now I own a 1/8" as well as 1/4". This little piece was done using wool yarns. It goes super fast and I'm liking what I see.

It's been a very fun~filled day. It's always a good day when you spend time with friends doing a little needle punch and some locker hooking! I teach a class in Moore, Oklahoma in a primitive store called "Country Collections". If you are ever in central Oklahoma you will want to stop by.
If you love primitive this store is for you. Even before you enter the door you'll be tempted by all there is in the windows. Primitive Folk Art painted items on just about anything you can imagine, hand hooked wool rugs, needle punches, little quilts, treasures of all kinds.
Open the door and you'll be greeted by Karen and Vonda. A daughter and mother who own and operate the store. They offer patterns for just about any kind of handcraft you can imagine. From the ceiling to the floor you'll see wonderful goodies of supplies to make your own handmades or perhaps your looking for a ready made gift well they got them! You can see wonderful handmade quilts, samples of hooked rugs, locker hooking, needle punch, embroidery, wool applique, folk art painting, unique stenciling, needle felting and more. You just want know where to start!

This is my good friend Sandra. She teaches the rug hooking and quilting classes. She dyes lots of the wool they offer and is always making something new.

Jeanie and Doris were new to needle punch today but they caught on quickly and had accomplished quite a bit before the day was done.

Judy and Karen began a locker hook rug. They chose homespun fabrics and decided to do scrappy rugs. By the end of the day they each had a good start on their little rugs.

Karen Hart is one of the owners of the shop and I caught her a little off guard...sorry Karen. Her mom Vonda is always busy somewhere's in the shop. Helping someone or making something wonderful for lunch.

When we have classes everyone brings a little something to share for lunch and we usually wind up swapping some recipes before the day is done! Today was no exception we had some great foods and desserts....mmmmhhh!

Well after class I headed home and Danny has been hard at it. This ol' country gal is loving the new solar powered gate he has put in. Now when it's raining I don't have to get wet opening the gate just a click of the button and waalah!

Of course the cows decided I'd just have to wait they were crossing the drive headed down to the barn where Danny was. Whenever they see him they think it's feeding time!

Now it's time to put away the craftin' for just a little while and get busy with preparing for Sunday. Our little church is having a fall cookout tomorrow evening, with games for the children as well as adults. The children will be singing for us and we always have a great time when the guys bring out the guitars, banjo's, and fiddles. Soon we'll be tapping our toes and singing along. Nothing feeds your soul as much as fellowship with friends and family.

Until we meet again HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU......Ginger

~*~ A Time to Remember ~*~

This is sure to be a lengthy post but I do it for my family. My sisters and Mom visit my blog at times and they were unable to make the trip to see the places where Dad grew up.
My Dad grew up as a kid mostly in San Saba, Texas. Times were hard but he said that he really never knew it at the time. There was always food on the table and to a young boy that's what counts. He was the next to the youngest of six children. His dad was quite a bit older than his mom.
I never met my Grandpa he passed away when my Dad was 10 years old. I have pictures of him and of all the kids my Dad looks the most like him. He worked several jobs, he was a pumper in the oilfield, he laid bricks for a road that still exist in Breckenridge, Texas. We have driven across those bricks many times going to visit my Grandma when she was still living. We drove across them on this trip and Dad told me about his dad laying those bricks. Makes you feel good that a part of what he did with his hands is still around.
Dad told me of when he was a young boy not too long before his Dad passed away. It was during a cold winter and their house caught fire. Everyone got out but dad only had what he had on...his long underwear and he was able to grab his shoes. His Dad made it out but without his shoes and his feet froze.
My Grandma was a hard worker, too. She helped to run a gas station...she pumped the gas. One time Bonnie and Clyde came by to buy gas she said they treated her very nice and paid for the gas. Bonnie had a machine gun lying across her lap...Grandma was asked if she was scared and she said she wasn't....I would have been!
She also worked in a nursing home and later on in a sewing factory.
There is quite a funny story of Grandma and Grandpa. My Grandpa was about 40 years old when he asked my Grandma to marry him. She was about 20 years old at the time. She left a note for her Moma and Pa saying....Dear Moma and Papa I have went to meet Mr. Doyle to marry him. Bye Bye now....Love Nodra The piece of paper she wrote this on was framed and hung in her home for as long as I can remember.

Now for the pictures....

Down by the old mill stream in San Saba, Texas. They have restored some of the pieces. My Dad said that as a young kid, him and several boys once took gasoline and poured on the water and set it afire.

This is the old jail. I asked Dad if he had ever been in there and he said all the school kids use to tour it. Perhaps it was in hopes of keeping them on the right side of the law.

Pecan Grove Baptist Church is where Dad attended with his family as a child. Daddy and his brother Desmond "Des" worked for the pastor of the church plowing and planting his fields. I believe Des was about 10 years older than Dad. They lived in a shack outside of the pastor's house. They could have eggs from the hens that the pastor's wife had but Daddy said Des was always in a hurry to get to work or get to bed. They always ate oatmeal....Dad won't eat oatmeal to this day unless it's oatmeal cookies which is his favorite cookie!

As we drove along the road we seen lots of deer in the fields and crossing the road. Dad told of stories of growing up with his friends and neighbors. He pointed out places and things that happened.

Harmony Ridge Cemetary is built upon a rock hill. Dad and Des once helped to dig a grave there. He said it took 2 days with the help of others. He still wonders to this day why anyone would start a cemetary on a rock hill. It took picks and shovels and lots of muscle to get the work done.

Dad and his younger brother "Bill" along with some friends spent many a day swimming here. Under the large rock was a little air pocket where you could come up and catch a breath of air. They also would swing out on the rope. I'm sure over the years the rope had to be replaced. The land was owned by the Reisen family and then was donated to be used as a park.

We left San Saba saturday morning...while we were there we did see my Aunt Evelyn dad's sister in law. She was married to Des but he passed away 3 years ago. We went to visit them so long ago when I was just a kid...some of my best memories were visiting them on the ranch and riding a horse and playing in the hay barns with my cousins. We also stopped by my cousin Cindy's home for a very quick visit!

We arrived Saturday around noon at my dad's youngest brother and wife's house. Dad and Uncle Bill always have lots of stories to share and they also try to outdo each other on everything to this day!

It wasn't long before they had the trotlines set out and we headed down to one of the ponds to try and catch some bait. Bill always says Dad is resting while he is working and you'll notice in most of the pictures Dad is taking a lil' rest.

This is the river behind Bill's house. He pumps water out of it to irrigate the pecan trees in the front of his home.

Dad goes up the hill on the steps that Bill and Sandy made of logs.

Dad found this live oak tree not too far from where I was fishing and called for me to come look. Up in the tree was a prickly pear cactus growing in the branches of the tree. My Grandma use to make prickly pear preserves. Bet it was a sticky task!

Back at Bill and Sandy's we took a look at their garden. Sandy does most of the gardening and sells some of her produce to the locals.

This is some of the okra that they have growing. It is called "Fat Okra" and is very tender. We each brought home some to cook as well as some dried pods for seeds. I hope to plant some next summer.

Bill and Sandy also have a pecan orchard of about 300 trees in front of their home. They harvest the pecans and sell them and also work for other folks tending their orchards.

They built their home some 20 years ago and have lots of rock work on the inside. It is done in the rustic cabin style.

Dad slept out here. They have a screened in back porch. Our grandma use to have one when we went to visit. I just love screened in porches!

We left Tues morning bright and early and started making our way back home. We stopped at Dad's older brother's house and visited with my Uncle Don and Aunt Nancy. We had a wonderful home cooked dinner and homemade pecan pie. It was so good to be able to have a few hours to visit with them.

There are more stories but it will have to wait until another day. It was a trip that I will always treasure and feel sad that my sisters didn't have the chance to see and hear all the memories that my daddy treasures to this day!

There's No Place Like Home

Dad and I under a live oak tree just after fishing in the San Saba river near Menard, Texas.

Dad and I had such a good time visiting with family. We arrived home yesterday evening and as I drove up the driveway I said to him there's no place like home and what does he do but start clicking the heels of his boots together. I suppose he was glad to be back too!

I have so many wonderful pictures to share of deer, rivers, cactus, sunrises, pecan orchids and the list just goes on.

My aunt took me into Fredericksburg, Texas to a rug hooking shop and it was stocked with wools, rug hooking books and supplies. We visited antique stores and thrift shops, ate at a little tea room and had an absolutely wonderful time.

I had the pleasure of fishing and visiting with family that I hadn't seen in years. It was nice to get away with Dad and see places where he grew up and hear the tales of his youth. I'll be back soon to share photo's and show you all my goodies I found along the way.

You still have until tomorrow evening to sign up for the fall giveaway. Just check on the post below where it says "A penny for your thoughts" and sign up!

THE STARS ARE BRIGHT DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS

I'll be packing up for a few days and heading out to Texas Friday morning with my Dad. He grew up near San Saba it's several hours southwest of Dallas. He will be going to a HS reunion and then we will visit 2 of his brothers and maybe his sister.

His youngest brother lives down by a river and my Dad plans to do some fishing. Our son went with Dad a couple of years ago....They were having a great time until my Uncle Bill fell and broke his leg. Now folks this is out in the sticks and he was down a hillside. Cell phones don't work too well, Dan said he had to climb a tree about 30 ft high to get reception.

So what do they do...why grab a cot and put Uncle Bill on there and commence to pullin' and pushin' Bill up to the truck. My Dad is not a big fella and Dan isn't either but Uncle Bill on the other hand is a good sized man! So they had to work real hard to get him up that hill. Once they made it up to the pickup they were able to load him into the back of the pickup. To stabilize his leg they found some red electrical wire and tied his legs together. Sounds like one of the stories...you might be a redneck if!

Now Uncle Bill has some neighbors of Cajun decent and it just happens that when they were driving down the dirt road that the Misses just happened to be out and what does she see but Bill tied up in a truck. She has no idea what's going on. She tells her husband somebody has Bill and they have him tied up in the back of the truck.

Well Dan and my Dad stopped after a bit and got him loaded into the backseat before they continued on to the hospital....later that evening the neighbor lady got a visit from Dan and Dad giving her the fish they had caught and the story of Bill breaking his leg. They got a big laugh out of how she thought Bill was being kidnapped!

I'll be gone for a few days and I sure don't plan to climb up no trees to use my cell phone for fear I might not get down. Dan has also warned me about the rattle snakes so I plan to be on the lookout for anything moving! Sounds like a trip that could be filled with adventure.

Now don't forget about my fall giveaway...just check the post right below this one if you want to sign up I'll be giving it away next Thursday that is if I survive the rattlers!

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
~FALL GIVEAWAY~

Don't you just love AUTUMN!

We will be leaving on vacation soon...and I can hardly wait. We will be traveling to the New England States and the colors there during the Autumn season are breathtaking!

We will travel to Vermont, New Hampshire, and make our way to Cape Cod. Just a relaxing time together exploring antique shops, a few quilt and rug hooking places, and of course Danny just loves clam chowder so we will be finding lots of wonderful places to eat!

I stitched up this plain and simple pumpkin penny rug...nothing fancy at all! I used some wool from my scrap basket and put it on some hand~dyed prairie cloth and I want to give it away to one of you. I'm also including a quaint little tart warmer that says Olde Crow Inn and some wonderful cranberry tarts.

All you have to do is leave a comment " a cherished thought of your childhood".

Here is one of mine~
When I was a little girl we lived in town. We had a big pecan tree on the side of the house and us girls would watch in awe of how our Dad would shimmy right up that big ol' tree. He would climb far up into the tallest of branches and go out onto one of the limbs. Then he would hold on and begin shaking and jumping on the limb...next thing you know the sky was raining down pecans everywhere. Then he would come down fast as lightening and we would help him gather up the pecans. Mom would shell them and we would try to eat them as fast as she shelled them. With 4 girls it was hard to get ahead. She would keep on working and before you know it mmmmhhhh...homemade pecan pie!

I'll announce the winner of the fall giveaway on Thursday evening Sept. 25th and if you don't have a blog just leave me an email address just in case your the winner!

Oklahoma's Great State Fair

Bright lights, crisp cool air, the aroma of grilled onions intermingled with peppers and beef, silver dollar cinamon rolls, blue ribbons, beautifully groomed livestock....yes the Great State Fair of Oklahoma has arrived.
Yesterday was a little rainy at times but it was the perfect day to go to the Fair. We enjoyed walking through the livestock buildings and watching the 4~H and FFA kids showing their prize animals. They were beautifully groomed right down to the pigs. We reminisced of days that Danny showed his pigs at the fair when he was in FFA and how much the fair grounds have improved over the years.
There were clydsedale horses that stood so tall and proud, sheared sheep, and a petting area for all the kids to learn about farm animals. In one area we even saw a young man holding a baby kangaroo.
Of course you could see and hear about all the latest gadgets, tools, cooking wares, handmade signs, and more. We stopped to watch the lumber jacks as they held contest to see who could cut their logs the quickest. The log races are always a hit as they stand on top of the logs and try to roll each other off into the water.
We watched the pig races and rock climbing and then we went down the midway to see all the games with the huge stuffed animal prizes. There were rides of all kinds...some would take you high into the air and then just drop! Rides that would spin you upside down and side to side. Giant ferris wheels, roller coasters, and fun houses light up the night skies.
We shared a corn dog, funnel cake, turkey leg and we each had a jug of rootbeer. There was so much food to choose from it was hard to decide.
Buildings were filled with handmade crafts, homegrown pumpkins, jams, jellies, breads, cookies, and cakes that had been judged in their categories. Ribbons of blue, red, and yellow were placed on the winners in each event.
My sister Jane and my Mom entered several of their items in the cooking categories and each of them won ribbons and prize money. Jane took home two 1st ribbons in the Fleishman yeast categories with a whopping $250.00. Mom received 3rd place for her delicious pear relish.
My 8 year old niece Mandy entered a pillowcase she made and won 3rd place. She will be back next Saturday with her big sister Erin to enter in the kid's cooking contest.
My needle punch Mr. Pennyworth came in 1st place and has a big blue ribbon along with $50.00 in prize money....Looks like I will have some spending money for more wool goodies!
We had a great time at the fair. We came home tired but had a wonderful day together at the Great State Fair of Oklahoma!

It's been raining....

With all the hurricanes hitting the coasts we have been getting the rain. Slow drenching rains and we aren't complaining. After having been in droughts before with dangers of fire you come to love the rain. The slow gentle rains just make me want to curl up with a good movie and a project in my hand. I made this whimsical little cat last night and I named her Tillie. I have started a little pattern shop over on the Lemon Poppy Seeds but they are having a little trouble with the pattern directory so they just placed it right under my other shop and called it #2. Whatever works is fine with me.

Tomorrow Jenn our daughter will be going in for some surgery and it is sure to be tough on her as well as Mom. It's always hard to see our children go through pain whether they are toddlers or grown. I plan to take a little handwork with me to help pass the time and keep my mind busy.

We are still waiting on word about my Dad's test. He had a stroke a couple of weeks back that has affected one of his eyes to the point he can hardly see out of that eye. He doesn't let it get him down though...he has been busy planting winter wheat and my Mom helps him to get the seed into the drill.

Thought I would share a quick and easy supper idea with you. I don't make this very often but it is very good. They make it at Silver Dollar City in large skillets over a fire and there is sure to be a hungry crowd standing in line!

This is what I use but there is many different variations.

I deep fry okra cause we like it crunchy. Meanwhile in another skillet I cook up a bag of potatoes o'brien or just cut up some potatoes, onions, and bell peppers and fry them up in a little bit of oil. When the potatoes are about half way done I add in some lean turkey sausage or sometimes I add smoked sausage just depends what we have.

Once the okra is done I add it to the skillet with the potatoes and meat. Then I add a can of whole kernel corn drained or frozen corn. Cook until everything is well heated.

I then take it out of the skillet and place it on a paper towel to drain to cut down on the fat. Add a little salt and pepper and enjoy!

You can also use fried sweet potatoes, squash, and green beans for a change.

Don't You Hear The Whistle Blowin'.....

I've been workin' on the railroad,
All the live long day.

I've been workin' on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.

Don't you hear the whistle blowing?
Rise up so early in the morn.

Don't you hear the captain shouting
"Sloan, blow your horn?"

You just never know what this little boy is up to each day. He loves to try his hand at anything he can get his hands on! His moma sent him to work with his daddy this morning dressed in his working overalls. So we just had to make a little trip to a place not far from where we live that has a little red caboose right on Main Street.

I think Bullriding is in his near future....stay tuned!

A Fun lil' Day Trip!

Today we went over to Danny' parents house and picked them up for a little trip down to the south part of Oklahoma. Danny's dad grew up around Lake Texoma and two of his sisters still live near there in Durant, Ok. Danny and I haven't been down for a visit in several years and we decided to go with his folks for a little visit.

Each month if they can his folks go down to Durant and meet with his cousins and sisters for lunch. They sit and reminisce of days gone by and talk about the days to come. They argue and tease and they are such fun to be around. One of his sisters will be 91 next month and she is still a spitfire! She still bosses her little brother around and I just loved it! I hope that I live a long life with as much spunk as they all have.

Danny's parents are in the back of this picture with his cousins in front.

This is a picture of my father~in~law with his sister that will soon turn 91!
Unfortunately his other sister didn't feel well and went home early so I didn't get a photo of them together.

We made a few stops on the way home at a surplus store and then a favorite of all of us....a Fried Pie Store. They sell the most delicious homemade fried pies. We bought enough to bring home and freeze for later. Now doesn't that sound good heated up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.....What a perfect end to a wonderful day!

In The Meadow We Can Build A Snowman

I thought I would pull out the wool and give rug hooking another try. There are so many talented hookers out there and do they ever make some nice rugs. I struggle with monk's cloth but I'm pulling up loops with ease on this linen.

I'm hoping that if I work on this a little every evening even if I just get a few strips worked in it will be finished before the Christmas season.

I've made it to day 3 so far so good. Thank goodness I like primitive because my hooking is just as primitive as can be!

Today I made a visit to Country Collections for a few hours of stitching with some friends. It's always a good time when you are surrounded by wool, fabric, friends, and food!

Wishing each of you a fun~filled happy weekend!

Early Autumn Day on the Plains of Oklahoma

How cool the wind blew across the Oklahoma plains today. Autumn is in the air I can surely feel it. This evening I went for a walk across the pastures that are still so green for September. Most summer's it is brown by now but the green rich grasses are hanging on.

This ol' moma cow always keeps her eye out for me. She is always checking to see what I'm doing walking around in her pasture. I think she must be enjoying the cool weather, too!

Wild sunflowers continue to creep up across the pasture....simple beauty that needs no tendin'....

Can't you imagine so long ago a little prairie wife taking a walk across the field perhaps to give her husband a noon meal as he is harvesting the crops before winter days settle in and on her walk home she stops to pick a few wildflowers to brighten her little sod house. Little is much when God is in it!

With the close of another day here at our little farm I have reflected back through my days of childhood knowing that I have been loved and that I have loved.
Take time to cherish the simple things in life.

~*Happy Labor Day*~

It's another busy week and for us Labor Day means of another day of LABOR! I find myself at work today but am pleased that the telephone is not ringing constantly and I can find a little time to work on some needle punch pieces I brought along.

The weather will be changing soon and the days are already beginning to shorten. I want to take a walk in our little woods and begin gathering the dropping acorns to put in my wooden bowls along with my other fall items. I've been hearing a hoot owl over by the pond even during the day...wonder if that means anything or maybe he just wanted to say he doesn't give a hoot what time of day it is!

I've been punching like a crazy lady here lately. I guess you could say it's my therapy.

I came up with this great white pumpkin and it reminds me of the carriage in Cinderalla. I love that little song the mice sing while she is busy working...
Cinderelly, Cinderelly
Night and day it's Cinderelly

now I change it up to fit my needs a bit

Gingerelly, Gingerelley
Night and day it's Gingerelly
Make the fire, fix the breakfast
Wash the dishes, do the mopping

And the sweeping and the dusting
They always keep her hopping

She goes around in circles
Till she's very, very dizzy
Still they holler

Keep a-busy Gingerelly!

It's true I do sing this occasionally and by no means do I have a singing voice.

My good friend Betty of Primitivebetty's was such a dear and honored me with this award. Be sure to pop over to her blog and see what she has been creating. She does awesome olde~style handmades. I have the pleasure of owning a few of her handmades.
